Key takeaways

  • → 1–14 days from order to a fitted stairlift for brands such as Acorn and Stannah (Which?, 2026).
  • → 1–5 hours on site on installation day (Acorn).
  • → 66cm: minimum stair width for an Acorn 130 straight stairlift, or 70cm for the curved Acorn 180 (Acorn).
  • → Treads, not walls: most rails are fixed to the stairs themselves (Acorn).
  • → 37% of owners needed a professional repair while they owned their stairlift, at an average cost of £257 (Which? owner survey, Dec 2022).
Stairlift installation: engineer measuring a staircase and positioning a rail on the stair treads

A stairlift installation is usually quick. Which? says branded stairlifts take between one and 14 days to install from order,[1] and Acorn puts the fitting itself at one to five hours.[5]Most installation problems trace back to something missed earlier: a socket too far from the stairs, no room to swivel at the top, or a seatbelt the user can't manage. This guide covers what happens on the day, the eight most common problems, real experiences from owners, and a checklist to take to your free home survey.

1What happens during a stairlift installation

An installation has three stages: a free home survey, the fitting of the rail and chair, and a final test with training for the user.

The survey. The surveyor checks that the stairs are wide enough and, for a seated stairlift, that there's enough room for the user's knees. They also assess whether the user can physically and mentally manage the controls and seatbelt.[1] The fitting. Rails are fixed to the stair treads rather than the wall,[4] and the chair is then mounted on the rail. At Stairlifts Cost, straight stairlifts are typically fitted within three to five working days of ordering, and most jobs take under two hours on site. A curved track takes three to four weeks to build. Our guide to how curved rails are made explains why. The handover. The engineer tests the stairlift and trains the user, and doesn't leave until they're confident using it.[5]

Treads

not walls: Acorn stairlifts are fixed directly to the stairs, so wall decorations and handrail fixings usually stay where they are.[4][5]

28 stairlift installation problems, and how to prevent them

Each of these problems can be caught at the survey. Where an owner has described it happening, their experience is included, labelled as user-reported.

1The stairs are too narrow

Minimum widths depend on the model, for example 66cm for an Acorn 130 straight stairlift and 70cm for the curved Acorn 180.[4] If your stairs are close to the limit, read whether a stairlift will fit narrow stairs before the survey.

Prevent it at the survey: Ask for the minimum width of the model you're quoted, and how much walking space will be left beside it.

2There's no room to swivel safely at the top

The seat swivels at the top so the user can get off facing away from the stairs. Acorn's specification for its 130 outdoor stairlift lists 670mm as the minimum width needed to swivel at the top.[6] A landing door or a tight turn can limit that space.

Prevent it at the survey: Ask the surveyor to show you where the seat will swivel and where the user will step off.

3Obstructions, trims and doors near the stairs

Acorn asks customers to clear the stairs of clutter and anything near the steps, such as cabinets or objects hanging close to the treads.[5] Fixed items like trims, radiators or a door that opens across the bottom step need sorting out before fitting day.

Real experience

A UK neighbour was told by fitters that a carpeted wooden trim at the foot of the stairs, next to a door, had to come off. Commenters advised lifting the carpet first and checking for hidden pipes or cables before cutting anything.[10]

Prevent it at the survey: Agree in writing what needs moving or removing, and who does it, before the installation date.

4There's no power socket near the stairs

Stairlift batteries are usually charged from mains charging points at the top and bottom of the stairs.[1] Our chargers plug into a standard 13-amp socket, and we need one within three metres of the top or bottom step. Which? notes that installing power points can add time to an installation.[1]

Real experience

On a US caregivers' forum, one family's nearest socket was about four metres from the stairs, beyond the reach of the charging cables offered. Installers replied that an electrician can add a socket. One said: "don't order anything before someone comes out to measure."[9]

Prevent it at the survey: Confirm where the charger will plug in. If a socket is needed, ask who will fit it, what it costs and how long it adds.

5The user can't manage the seatbelt or controls

Which? says the survey should assess the user's ability to use the controls and seatbelt,[1] and that the surveyor should assess the user in person where possible. If that's not possible, for example because the user is in hospital, give the surveyor full details of their abilities.[2]

Real experience

A carer's father, who has arthritis in his hands, struggled to fasten the lap belt on his new stairlift, and the stairlift won't move unless the belt is clipped in. A reply suggested asking the installer about easier belt options. The family solved it with belt extenders.[8]

Prevent it at the survey: Make sure the person who will use the stairlift is at the survey and tries the belt and controls. Ask what alternatives are available.

6New carpet is fitted after the stairlift

Because the rail is fixed through the treads, replacing the carpet afterwards means working around the stairlift. Which?'s expert advice is to plan carpet replacement before installation, to avoid the cost of temporarily removing the stairlift later.[2]

Prevent it at the survey: Fit any new stair carpet before the installation date.

7A second-hand stairlift is fitted without an installer

The rail has to suit the staircase, and the safety switches have to be set correctly. A professionally fitted reconditioned stairlift is the cheaper way to buy without that risk. Our guide to support for carers covers other help available at home.

Real experience

One owner fitted a used Bruno stairlift themselves and it wouldn't move. Other users suggested fresh batteries, testing the limit switches and checking that the track stop had been removed.[11]

Prevent it at the survey: Use a professional installer for any stairlift, new or reconditioned, and get the warranty in writing.

8Aftercare and call-out costs aren't clear

TK Home Solutions told Which? to "look at the company as a long-term commitment", checking whether it's a manufacturer or authorised dealer with access to replacement parts.[2] Every new stairlift we fit comes with a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

Real experience

Owners told Which?: "The cost of aftercare was not clearly explained which was an issue because the stairlift did break down a fair bit." Another said their mother-in-law had been "stranded upstairs pending repair on two or three occasions."[3]

Prevent it at the survey: Before you sign, ask what the warranty covers, what a call-out costs, how quickly engineers respond, and who supplies spare parts.

For a guide to costs, our UK stairlift price guide covers prices and VAT relief, and a reconditioned stairlift is the cheapest way to buy.

3After installation: repairs, batteries and servicing

Most running costs come from batteries and occasional repairs, and annual servicing helps keep the stairlift reliable.

Which? gives battery life as three to five years in its January 2025 expert article[2] and says in its 2026 guide that batteries may need replacing every couple of years.[1] Replacements cost £80 to £300. The 37% repair figure covers the whole time people owned their stairlift, not just installation. Councils service the domestic stairlifts they maintain once a year and have them legally inspected (a LOLER thorough examination) every six months, though this doesn't apply to stairlifts people buy privately.[7]See our guides to how often to service a stairlift and what a beeping stairlift means.

Pre-survey checklist

0/8 ready

Questions to ask your surveyor (8):

  1. Can the surveyor assess the user in person? If not, give them full details of the user's mobility and grip.
  2. Is the staircase wide enough for this model, and how much walking space will be left?
  3. Where will the seat swivel at the top, and is there enough room for it?
  4. Will anything near the stairs need moving or removing, and who will do it?
  5. Where will the charger go, and does a socket need adding? Who arranges it and how much will it cost?
  6. Which seatbelt and control options are there for weak or arthritic hands?
  7. Does the date work around any carpet fitting?
  8. What does the warranty cover, what does a call-out cost, and how quickly do engineers respond?

5Methodology

We researched this guide on 4 October 2026 and cite 11 sources. Four are from 2026: the Which? guide and three Reddit threads. Three are from 2025: the Which? expert article, Harrow Council's policy and one Reddit thread. The Which? owner survey dates from December 2022 (published 2024) and is included because no newer UK survey of repairs exists. Acorn's specifications date from 2021 to 2023 and are the manufacturer's current published figures. User experiences come from public Reddit threads and are labelled as user-reported. One is from a US forum. Stairlifts Cost's own process details are first-party and labelled as ours. We found no reliable data on how often installations go wrong, so we don't give a rate.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a stairlift installation take?+

Which? says branded stairlifts take between one and 14 days to install from order, with longer waits for curved models or if power points or carpentry are needed. On the day itself, Acorn puts the fitting at one to five hours. Our straight stairlifts are typically fitted within three to five working days of ordering, and most take under two hours on site.

Is a stairlift fixed to the wall?+

No. Most stairlifts are fixed to the stair treads, not the wall. Acorn states that its stairlifts are installed directly to the stairs, so wall decorations and handrails usually stay where they are. This is also why the minimum staircase width matters: 66cm for an Acorn 130 straight stairlift and 70cm for an Acorn 180 curved one.

Do I need a power socket for a stairlift?+

Yes. Stairlift batteries are usually charged from mains charging points at the top and bottom of the stairs (Which?). Our chargers plug into a standard 13-amp socket, and we need one within three metres of the top or bottom step. If there isn't one, add the electrical work to the plan at the survey, because Which? notes it can add time to the installation.

What should I do before the installer arrives?+

Clear the stairs of clutter and anything near the steps, such as cabinets or objects hanging close to the treads (Acorn). Replace the stair carpet first if you're planning to, since Which? advises sorting carpets before installation. Make sure the person who will use the stairlift can attend the survey, so the surveyor can check they can manage the controls and seatbelt.

What are the most common stairlift problems after installation?+

In a Which? owner survey (December 2022), 37% of owners needed a professional repair while they owned their stairlift, at an average cost of £257, and call-outs reached £275 plus parts. Batteries are a regular cost: Which? puts replacements at £80 to £300, lasting three to five years in one article and every couple of years in another.

Can I install a used stairlift myself?+

It isn't recommended. Rails are fitted to a specific staircase, and safety switches have to be set correctly. One owner on Reddit fitted a used stairlift that wouldn't move. Other users suggested fresh batteries, testing the limit switches and checking that the track stop had been removed. Buying a professionally fitted reconditioned stairlift with a warranty avoids this.
